A digital marketing strategy is a written plan that connects your business goals to specific channels, messages, budgets, and measurements. Without one, businesses tend to drift from tactic to tactic: a few social posts, a month of ads, a blog that goes quiet. A strategy does the opposite. It decides what you will do, what you will not do, and how you will know it worked.
Step 1: Set goals tied to revenue
Start from the business outcome and work backward. If you need 10 new customers a month and close 25% of qualified leads, you need 40 qualified leads. If your website converts 3% of visitors into leads, you need roughly 1,300 visits. Now you have a number every channel can be judged against, instead of vague targets like brand awareness.
Step 2: Define your audience and their search behavior
Write down who buys, what problem they have, which questions they type into Google, and what makes them trust a provider. Look at the countries and languages you sell in, because search terms, platforms, and buying habits vary by market. A buyer in the UK, the UAE, and Australia may use quite different words for the same service.
Step 3: Audit what you already have
Review your website speed and structure, your current rankings, your ad accounts, your social profiles, and your email list. Look at competitors to see which keywords and platforms they win on. This usually reveals quick wins: pages with no title tags, ads sending traffic to the homepage, or a list that has never been emailed.
Step 4: Choose your channel mix
- ▸Need leads this month: start with Google Ads and a dedicated landing page.
- ▸Building durable, low-cost traffic: invest in SEO and content marketing.
- ▸Visual or consumer product: add social media marketing and creator content.
- ▸Repeat purchases or long sales cycles: build email and automation.
Step 5: Set a budget and rules for spending it
Many businesses set aside a percentage of revenue for marketing, and growth-focused companies often spend more than those maintaining their position. Whatever the number, split it deliberately, for example 60% to your proven channel, 30% to a promising second channel, and 10% to testing. Review the split quarterly. For cost expectations, see our digital marketing pricing guide.
Step 6: Put tracking in place before you launch
Install Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and conversion tracking for forms, calls, and purchases. Without this you cannot compare channels. Use UTM tags on every campaign link so each lead has a known source.
Step 7: Build a 90-day plan and review monthly
- 1Days 1 to 30: fix the website basics, set up tracking, launch one paid campaign, and publish the first priority pages.
- 2Days 31 to 60: improve landing pages from the data, publish more content, start email follow-up, and test new ad creative.
- 3Days 61 to 90: cut weak campaigns, scale the best ones, and plan the next quarter.
