Content marketing is the creation and distribution of useful information, such as articles, guides, videos, and tools, that attracts the right audience and moves them toward becoming customers. A strong content strategy turns your website into an asset that earns traffic month after month without paying for every visit.
Start with topic research, not ideas
Use keyword research tools, Google Search Console, People Also Ask boxes, and your sales team's most common questions to build a list of topics people really search. For each topic, check what currently ranks and what is missing. The best opportunities are questions with clear commercial value where existing answers are thin, outdated, or generic.
Map content to the buyer journey
- ▸Awareness: educational guides and explainers, such as "what is" and "how to" content.
- ▸Consideration: comparisons, checklists, and buying guides that help people evaluate options.
- ▸Decision: service pages, case studies, pricing explanations, and FAQs that remove the last doubts.
Most blogs overinvest in awareness and neglect decision content. The pages closest to the sale often convert best, so plan them early.
Organize with topic clusters
Rather than publishing unrelated posts, build clusters: one comprehensive pillar page on a core topic, supported by detailed articles on its subtopics, all linked together. This shows search engines your depth on a subject and helps readers move naturally through your site. Our SEO guide for small businesses is a good example of a pillar page.
Write for people, structure for search and AI
- ▸Answer the main question in the first paragraph, then add depth.
- ▸Use clear headings that match how people phrase questions.
- ▸Include real examples, numbers, and first-hand experience, which competitors cannot copy.
- ▸Add FAQ sections and schema markup where they genuinely help the reader.
- ▸Cite credible sources and keep facts current.
This also helps your content get cited in AI answers. We cover this in detail in our guide to AEO and GEO.
Set a cadence you can keep
Two high-quality articles a month, kept up for a year, beat ten rushed posts followed by silence. Include time in your plan to refresh older posts, since updating a page that already ranks is often faster than building a new one.
Measure what content earns
Track organic traffic, rankings, time on page, inquiries that started on a blog post, and assisted conversions in GA4. Report by topic cluster so you can see which subjects produce leads and which only produce visits.
