Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the process of increasing the percentage of website visitors who take a valuable action, such as submitting a form, calling, booking, or buying. It is the multiplier on every other marketing channel. If you double your conversion rate, every pound, dollar, or rupee spent on ads, SEO, and social media returns twice as much.
How to calculate your conversion rate
Divide the number of conversions by the number of visitors and multiply by 100. If 2,000 people visit a landing page and 60 submit the form, the conversion rate is 3%. Measure it per page, per traffic source, and per device, because the averages across a whole site hide the real problems.
Find what is blocking visitors
- ▸Analytics: find pages with high traffic and low conversion, and steps where people drop off.
- ▸Heatmaps and session recordings: see where people click, stop, and get confused.
- ▸Surveys and sales calls: ask what nearly stopped them from enquiring.
- ▸Speed tests: slow pages lose visitors before they see your message. See our website speed guide.
High-impact CRO fixes
- 1Make the headline say what you offer and who it is for in one sentence.
- 2Put one primary call to action above the fold, and repeat it down the page.
- 3Shorten forms. Every extra field reduces completions.
- 4Add proof near the decision point: reviews, logos, case studies, guarantees.
- 5Fix mobile experience: tap targets, load time, and readable text.
- 6Show pricing signals or ranges to filter unqualified leads and reduce hesitation.
- 7Give people more ways to contact you, including WhatsApp, phone, and chat.
Run tests properly
A/B testing compares two versions of a page to see which converts better. Change one important thing at a time, run the test long enough to reach a reliable sample, and avoid stopping early because one version looks ahead. Low-traffic sites cannot test small changes reliably, so prioritize big, evidence-based improvements first.
CRO for paid traffic
If you pay for clicks, improving conversion rate directly lowers your cost per lead. Send each campaign to a page that matches the ad promise. Our article on landing pages vs homepages for PPC explains why.
